Soundscapes of Broadcasting
The development of FM/AM radio has endured the test of time and continues to play a crucial role as a medium of communication in our era. In Artist Chi Po Hao’s event score, he collected broadcast programs from cities such as Taipei, Tainan, Tokyo, Manila, and Perth. He then blended these sound materials into a composition. During the exhibition, he experimented with DIY FM/AM underground radio setup techniques, combining live (Real Time) sounds with multi-channel devices to create an immersive experience that integrates multiple time-spaces.
Artist's Event Score:
Materials:
- A radio or another device capable of receiving AM/FM broadcasts
- Instruction for this practice
- Recording equipment such as a smartphone or a portable recorder
Steps:
- Choose Time and Location: Select a time slot in the morning or the evening. Turn on your radio or receiving device in a suitable location.
- Initiate Scanning: Scan the available frequency range consistently, starting from the lowest frequency.
- Program Discovery: As you start hearing a broadcast signal, slow down your scanning speed enough to make out the content of the broadcast. Do not stop; resume the initial scanning speed when the broadcast becomes unclear.
- Repeat the Process: Continue this scanning procedure until you reach the highest frequency of your device.
- Switch Band (If Applicable): If your device supports both AM and FM, switch to the other band upon completing one, and then repeat steps 2-4.
- Record the Experience: Upon completion, use your recording tools to jot down the circumstances under which you conducted this exploration—time, location, and in what context (driving, at home, working, etc.).
