Birds Notation / Tide Notation
According to the artist, the title of the work ― For the Birds/Birds Notation is inspired by John Cage’s Conversation with Daniel Charles publication. In this piece where the sky serves as the score sheet, artist suzueli utilized the trace of birds and aircrafts, correlating their characteristics to instruments such as piano, percussion, and cello. Every movement of them are transformed into part of the composition. When light sensors installed on screens detect the shadows of birds and the brightness of clouds, the connected toy pianos are activated to produce sounds. After the disappearance of the birds and the planes, the sky then once again become clear and quiet.
"Tide Notation" is a creation that emerged in a flash of inspiration from the artist at the final moment of the project's progress. Similar to how "Birds Notation" featured video footage of the skies in Tokyo and Taipei, this time the artist extracted tidal data from Tokyo Bay and Tamsui River in Taipei. Subsequently, using Max/MSP software, sine waves corresponding to the tidal changes were produced and connected to two single speakers. The water bowls placed on the speakers vibrated with the sound waves, generating waves and creating ripples once again.
